Understanding ADHD Children & Adolescents
ADHD in children and adolescents impacts concentration, emotional regulation, behaviour, which may lead to challenges with friendships, family life and school performance. Symptoms can present differently depending on age, gender and developmental stage, and can sometimes overlap with anxiety, other learning difficulties or neurodevelopmental conditions.
At Online Psychiatry, our consultant psychiatrists provide comprehensive ADHD assessments designed to explore symptoms in depth, understand developmental history and identify possible co-occurring conditions.
Does your child…
Attention & Organisation
- Frequently lose school items, homework or personal belongings?
- Forget instructions shortly after hearing them?
- Start tasks enthusiastically but struggle to finish them?
- Forget to hand in completed homework or assignments?
Hyperactivity & Impulsivity
- Interrupt conversations or answer questions before they are finished?
- Struggle to sit still during lessons or meals?
- Fidget constantly with objects, clothing or their hands?
- Find it difficult to wait their turn during games or activities?
- Act before thinking about possible consequences?
Emotional & Daily Functioning
- Become frustrated very quickly over small setbacks?
- Struggle with routines such as homework, bedtime or getting ready for school?
- Seem constantly mentally “busy” or unable to switch off?
- Experience challenges maintaining friendships because of impulsive reactions or emotional overwhelm?
An ADHD assessment can give your child the answers, support and understanding they deserve.

How the ADHD pathway works
A simple, clear pathway designed to support safe diagnosis, treatment initiation and ongoing clinical follow-up.
1
Clinical Questionnaires
Validated questionnaires completed by parents, caregivers, and teachers provide a comprehensive view of the child’s attention, behaviour, emotional regulation, and functioning across settings.
2
Comprehensive Assessment
1h 15min
A detailed online assessment with a GMC-registered consultant psychiatrist exploring ADHD symptoms, developmental history, emotional wellbeing, and co-occurring conditions, with input from parents or caregivers where appropriate.
3
Diagnostic feedback
30min
Your psychiatrist will review the assessment, discuss the diagnosis, and recommend next steps, including school support where appropriate. If medication is indicated, a one-month prescription may be issued, followed by a review appointment.
Parent & Caregiver Involvement
We tailor each assessment to the child or young person’s needs.
- For children under 12, we recommend a parent or caregiver attends the full appointment to provide support and developmental information.
- For adolescents aged 12+, the young person is usually seen independently for approximately 45 minutes, followed by a 30-minute discussion with a parent or caregiver to gather additional developmental and collateral information.
What If ADHD diagnosis is not confirmed?
Some mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions can present with symptoms similar to ADHD, including difficulties with attention, impulsivity, emotional regulation, or behaviour.
If your assessment findings do not meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD, your psychiatrist will explain the reasons in detail and discuss any alternative explanations for your symptoms. In some cases, the assessment may identify another condition that better explains your presentation. Your psychiatrist will then provide personalised recommendations, treatment options, and appropriate support strategies.
What you will recive
- Diagnostic impression or formal diagnosis.
- Personalised treatment recommendations.
- Comprehensive written report.
- School and support guidance where appropriate.
- One-month prescription if clinically appropriate.
