Bipolar I Disorder
Bipolar I Disorder is a mood disorder characterised by episodes of mania and, often, episodes of depression. Manic episodes involve periods of unusually elevated or irritable mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, impulsive behaviour, or racing thoughts, and may significantly affect daily functioning. Depressive episodes can include persistent low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
Bipolar II Disorder
Bipolar II Disorder is characterised by recurring episodes of depression alongside episodes of hypomania, which is a milder form of mania. During hypomanic episodes, individuals may experience increased energy, heightened confidence, reduced need for sleep, or increased activity levels, though symptoms are typically less severe than in Bipolar I Disorder. The depressive episodes associated with Bipolar II Disorder can be significant and distressing.
Other Specified and Related Bipolar Disorders
Some individuals experience symptoms of mood instability, hypomania, or depression that do not fully fit the criteria for Bipolar I or Bipolar II Disorder but still have a significant impact on daily life. A comprehensive psychiatric assessment can help clarify symptoms and identify the most appropriate treatment and support options.
Our psychiatrists help you understand your symptoms and develop a personalised treatment plan to support mood stability, reduce relapse risk, and improve overall quality of life.
